1.1.1Transmission

Reconstructed from personal names in Memphis, c. 585-520 (Kammerzell 1993a:169, 171). Melchert 2013c:44 adds the Carian compound names with -υασσις as second member, but leaves the different form unexplained (note, however, the formally fitting Βρυαξις next to Βρυασσις, LGPN V.B:87). This issue requires further research.

1.1.3Meaning ‘(unknown)’

There is no doubt that u/wksmu is a compound name with mu- ‘power vel sim.’ (see s.v.), which is well-attested in the Luwic languages, see also Ουαξαμοας/-μως from Isauria and Cilicia (Zgusta 1964a:392 §1141-2, 3; LGPN V.B:333f.; Adiego 2007a:336, 427; Melchert 2013c:44), to which probably Ουαξα in Isauria and Cilicia (Zgusta 1964a:392 §1141-1; LGPN V.B:334) should also be added. However, nothing specific can be said about its meaning, partly due to the wide range of words that can be composed with mu- (see s.v.) and partly due to the circumstance that this word does not seem to be attested yet. An exception could be Lycian B waxssa- as a potential cognate, as proposed by Melchert 2013c:44, but its meaning is disputed (see s.v.) and thus, it is not helpful either.
