1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. MUNUS.MEŠe-er-ḫu-u-t[a-al-le-eš] Bo 7043 iv 4 (CTH 470, NS)
  MUNUS.GIŠir-ḫu-ta-al-le-eš KUB 25.49 ii 21 (CTH 628, NS)
  MUNUS.MEŠ.GIŠir-ḫu-i-da-al-li-š(=) KUB 25.49 ii 22 (CTH 628, NS)

Bo 7043 iv 4 is cited after Neu 1987b:339 n. 23. Perhaps also GIŠir-ḫu-i-ta-a[l?-l° (HW 2nd ed. E:92). – In spite of the plural determinative in ii 22, the forms are nom. sg. (KUB 25.49 ii 21 in agreement with the verb ḫarzi ibid. ii 22). Contra Starke 1990a:199, this need not be a scribal mistake, since names of professions can be used collectively in the singular for the whole group (cf. the nom. sg. MUNUS.MEŠḫazgaraza), especially when it consists of a large number unspecified members, which is likely in the case of basket-bearers.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – In MUNUS.GIŠir-ḫu-ta-al-le-eš no -i- is restored here (different Starke 1990a:199), because -ui- is sporadically shortened to -u- (cf. Simon 2016f).

1.1.4Meaning

The stem formation being transparent (see under Stem), it is obvious that the MUNUS.GIŠērḫu(i)talla/i- must be a person who has to do with the GIŠirḫui(t)- ‘basket’, most likely a basket-bearer. Confirmation comes from the attestation of GIŠirḫui ibid. ii 19 and the fact that the MUNUS.GIŠērḫu(i)talla/i- in ii 21 holds something (ii 22). The analysis and/or semantic assignment first suggested by Laroche 1953b:41 has entered the handbooks (HW:341, van Brock 1962a:84, Kronasser 1966a:176, Pecchioli Daddi 1982a:390, Puhvel 1977a:151, HEG A-K: 367f., HED A, E, I:284, HW 2nd ed. E:92, HHw:62, StBoT 1990a:199, CLL:92, Ünal 2007a:112).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

The nom. sg. MUNUS.GIŠērḫu(i)talla/i- belongs to the substantivization of a relational adjective in -alla/i- (for references, see under Meaning). For the base GIŠirḫui(t)- ‘basket’, see under Lemma.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The base GIŠirḫui(t)- ‘basket’ and the suffix -alla/i- are Luwian, and so is the resulting derivative (explicitStarke 1990a:199, CLL:92; further references on the origin of GIŠirḫui(t)- ‘basket’, see under Lemma). Also, the attestations being almost limited to the Ḫišuwa festival support this conclusion.

For the lemma head see CLuw. *irḫ(i)-.
