1.1.4Meaning ‘to make belong to one’s inner circle’

Until recently, the verb has defied an interpretation (DLL:36f., CLL:92, and HHw:30). Now, Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:217f. point out that the figura etymologica e-er-wa-an e-eḫ-ḫu-id-du appears in an incantation spoken to reconcile the child with his parents and to restore the relations within the family. The authors translate the passage according to their understanding idiomatically: “Let this human (child) regain (ēḫḫuiddu) his mother’s attachment (ērwan)! Let him be a child to his mother and oily (=gentle?) to his father!” The literal translation would be: “Let this human (child) make him own (the status of) belonging to the mother’s ‘inner circle’!” Following Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:218f., the semantic interpretation is confirmed also by other derivatives of the same base *irḫ(i)- ‘border, boundary’, which is conceptualized as a circle with the focus on including its interior (instead of excluding the exterior).

1.1.5Stem

Melchert (in CLL:92 and Melchert 1994a:271) already analyzed ēḫḫui-(ti) as a denominative verb in non-leniting -i- derived from irḫuwa- (for the loss of -r- see under Phonological Interpretation). In support of their semantic interpretation, Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:218 posit a derivational chain *irḫ(i)- ‘border, boundary’ → *irḫuwa(/i)- ‘interior’ (a polar adjective in -wa(/i)-, as opposed to *parittarwa(/i)- ‘exterior’) → ir(ḫu)wa- c. ‘(the) interior’ (a non-mutating -a- abstract noun), which then becomes the base of *ir(ḫu)walla/i- ‘(the) interior’ (+ substantivization) and its adjectival formation ir(ḫu)walli(ya)- ‘internal’. The present verb ēḫḫui-(ti) can be built from the adjective *irḫwa- ‘interior’ or the abstract noun irḫwa- c.Now superseded is Carruba 1982a:45: “eine Krankheit pflegen.”
