1.1.4Meaning

The word arūwāl(i)- is used as an epithet for the river Māla (Rieken & Sasseville 2019a:525). A precise meaning is not determinable from the single context in which the word appears, but a derivational and consequently semantic connection to the base aru- ‘high’ would seem likely. Given the aquatic connection, a meaning ‘deep’ thus becomes possible. For the compatibility with a base meaning ‘high’, cf. e.g. Lat. altus ‘high; deep’. Note that this meaning cannot be independently substantiated, however.

CLuw. arūwāl(i)- is most likely an adjective in -āl(i)- formed to a base aru- ‘high’.
