nom./acc. sg. ˹wa˺-ar-pa-˹al˺ KUB 42.34, 13’ (CTH 241, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The word is read as x-ra-pa-˹ra˺ by Košak 1982a:55, but as [x+]1 ˹wa˺-ar-pa-˹al˺ ZABAR by Siegelová 1986a:58 (followed by HEGW-Z:347).

1.1.4Meaning

Based on the context in which it is attested, warpal represents an object made of bronze. While Tischler (HEGW-Z:347) suggests an etymological connection with the root warp meaning ‘to enclose’, it may be more attractive to use the other warp-root related to Luw. /warp(i)-/ ‘weapon, tool’. However, without a proper meaning, nothing can be concluded here.

1.1.5Stem

The word warpal- is a Luwian instrument noun in -āl- n. (Starke 1990a:300f.).

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin is not mentioned by Tischler (HEGW-Z:347), although it is now clear that instrument nouns in -āl- n. (< *-ó-lo-) are Luwian, whereas the same suffix is continued in Hittite as -āli- n. (<< *-ó-lo-), see Rieken 2009b:152, Rieken 2008a:250 n. 7; contra Hoffner & Melchert 2008a:54.
