1.1.4Meaning

The Du.gur doppelter Glossenkeilpalpadamin ‘(the war-god) Nergal in a blazing? state’ and dingir.gal dingirLIM palpa[damin] “the Great Deity, the palpadamin deity” are requested to provide a terrifying sight for the evil sorcerer. For the tentative assignment of the meaning ‘to blaze’ and the respective references, see under palpati-.

1.1.5Stem

The stem formation remains unclear. Although it is tempting to analyze palpad- as a full reduplication with dissimilation of *d...d > l...d, i.e. < */pad-pad-/, other options are possible as well, e.g., a root *palp- with an abstract suffix -at(i)- transformed to a factitive verb in -a-(ti), but also palpada(i)-(di) or palpada-(i). All solutions would be compatible with Starke’s (Starke 1990a:158 n. 510) view that palpatittari is an “Oppositionsmedium” of palpada-.

1.1.6Origin

The obvious relationship with CLuw. palpati-, the form of the Luwian participle, and the use of the gloss wedges for palpadamin in a context that also features many other Luwianisms indicates clearly a Luwian origin (Laroche 1971b:149, Beckman 1983a:199, Starke 1990a:158 n. 510, CLL:165, CHDP:68f., HEGP:398, HHw:117, HEDPA:69, Bachvarova 2013a:151, Steitler 2017a:392f.).
