šūrit-

‘ball of wool’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in various Hittite ritual texts, i.e. the birth-ritual of Papanikri (CTH 476), a birth-ritual of Kizzuwatna (CTH 477), an oracle text concerning the cult of Ištar of Nineve (CTH 567), two ritual fragments (CTH 470, CTH 500) and possibly in a text pertaining to the (ḫ)išuwa-festival (CTH 628).

According to Melchert (CLL:197), this lexeme may be a plurale tantum.

The sequence [SÍ]G?šu-ri-ta-an-zi(-)ia-a[š on KUB 58.10:5’ is tentatively analyzed in CHD Š:650 as a Luwian nom. pl. c. form šuritanzi. This would be surprising, however, since the noun is clearly neuter (see Stem). The sequence is fragmentary and we can consequently not be sure that it does not constitute a single incomplete word, e.g. a Luwian stem in -i(ya)-. Hence, the analysis as nom. pl. c. in the table above should be considered highly provisory.

All forms have been checked against the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv).

Melchert (CLL:197) also cites an attestation KUB 14.23, 6 with a question mark. This form has not been included here since it is not verifiable on the basis of the images in the Fotoarchiv.

1.1.4Meaning

On KBo 5.1 and KUB 5.10, this lexeme appears in contexts concerning wools. In the plural, it is therefore probable that šūrit- refers to ‘balls of wool’ (see especially Nikolaev 2017b:567-569 for the relevant passages with translations and the interpretation of Luw. šūrit-, ‘ball of wool’ or similar is also assumed in e.g. Sommer & Ehelolf 1924a:71, Starke 1990a:209, CLL:197, Rieken 1999a:479, Strauß 2006a:302, CHD Š:650ff., left untranslated in Mouton 2016b:277)

[O.B.]

1.1.5Stem

This lexeme is a neuter stem formed with the Luwian suffix -id- (see Starke 1990a:209, Nikolaev 2017b:571).

[O.B.]

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian identity of šūrit- is indicated by the strictly Luwian suffix -id- (Starke 1990a:209, Melchert 2005a:449, Nikolaev 2017b:568). For an Indo-European etymology which would further support the Luwian status of the lexeme, see Nikolaev 2017b.
