1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The spelling with -el- occurs more than 10 times in Luwian lexemes and it is used in spite of the lack of a phoneme /e/ in that language, because it involves less imprints than -il-; cf. also the broad transcription of the present lexeme in CLL:82 as ḫuīllari-.

1.1.4Meaning

Although it emerges from the text type (cadaster) that doppelter Glossenkeilḫuyellar(i)- is the name or description of a field, nothing more specific can be said about the meaning based on the context (DLL:46, Souček 1959a:10f., HHw:s.v., Ünal 2007a:218; cf. also HW:330). All attempts to further elucidate the word are based on etymological considerations. Thus, Rosenkranz 1952a:16 and Güterbock 1956a:129 refer to CLuw. ḫuwallar(i)-, but that word is equally opaque (see under Lemma). In contrast, Melchert (CLL:82) linked doppelter Glossenkeilḫuyellar(i)- to the verb form ḫu-u-i-el-la-a-it, frequently interpreted as ‘to wind, twist’, which is based on a further connection to the Hittite root ḫul- ‘to wind, twist’ (after Schmitt-Brandt 1993a:88). However, both explanations can safely be excluded because -i- in the sequence -uie- does not render a subphonemic glide (see also Oettinger 1984a:46), but a separate phoneme, leaving no way to correlate Luw. ḫuiell- with the Hittite root ḫul- or Luw. ḫuwall-. Nevertheless, is is likely that and doppelter Glossenkeilḫuyellar(i)- and ḫuyellā(i)-(mi) (see under Lemma) are inter-related (HEG A-K:259).

1.1.5Stem

The noun doppelter Glossenkeilḫuyellar(i)- and the verb ḫuyellā(i)-(mi) are probably both based on a reconstructed nominal stem *ḫuyella-, the former derived with a mutated suffix -r(i)-.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

Both the gloss wedges and the r-suffix with an i-mutated ending point strongly to a Luwian borrowing into Hittite (see also DLL:46, CLL:82, Melchert 2005a:451, van den Hout 2006a:241, HHw:s.v.).
