1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. ḥrix̣uẉama TL 80.3 (Antiphellos)

Melchert (DLL:86) takes the ending -a (instead of expected -i) to be analogical to the head noun Malija, thereby suggesting secondary vowel agreement. A different approach would be a substantivization in -a- c. (for the “individualization”) of the participle xuwãme/i-, but this is not provable, as long as we do not find further examples of participial formations in -me/i- being substantivized with the common gender suffix -a-. Contra Neumann 2007a:99, who posits an action noun in -ma-.

1.1.4Meaning

The word hrixuwama is found as an epithet of the goddess Malija-Athena. It consists of the preverb hri ‘high, up’ and the participle of the verb xuwa-(ti) ‘to stand close to, attend’. Melchert (DLL:86) translates the epithet with ‘super-intending’ (followed by Shevoroshkin 2012a:465, Christiansen 2020a:230), whereas Serangeli 2015a:382 translates ‘the supervising/protecting one’; cf. also García Ramón 2016a:74 for various  meanings derived from the etymological link with Hitt. ḫuwāi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to walk, run’. Gehrisch 2018a:126f. prefers the meaning ‘assisting’. The general sense of the epithet is understood, even though the exact translation may vary.

[D.S.]

For the second member of the univerbation, see Lyc. A xuwa-(ti).
