1.1.2Forms

nom.-acc. sg. n. i-šar-ú-wa-ia-an KBo 13.263 r. col. 5’ (CTH 766, NS)
nom.-acc. pl. n. ˹i-šar˺-wa-ia KBo 29.16 ii? 8’ (CTH 761, NS)
? ˹i-šar-ú˺-x[…-]˹a˺ KBo 29.16 ii? 9’ (CTH 761, NS)

The attestations follow CLL:94 (not included in Laroche 1959a, cf. also HED K:164) and Yakubovich pers. comm. (who added KBo 29.16 ii? 9’, which is plausible, considering the context), checked against the photographs of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv (the signs marked here as fragmentary are practically unreadable).

1.1.3Meaning ‘right (in physical sense)’

This word is frequently translated as ‘favourable’ or something similar (CLL:94; EDHIL:471; Tischler 2008a:70, Tischler 2016a:129 [“richtig, günstig; rechts”]), although Starke 1990a:30, 121 translated it as ‘right’ (in physical and not in ethical sense) and HED K:164 provided no meaning (Ünal 2016a did not book this word). The context of KBo 13.263 and KBo 29.16 ii? 9’ is fragmentary and thus, it does not contribute. In KBo 29.16 ii? 8’ išarwaya- qualifies a (type of) bone referring to the thigh, with which the ritual is performed and thus, ‘favourable’ is not really fitting, while ‘right’ could fit. This can further be supported by its generally assumed etymology, i.e. a connection with Luwian išarwil(i)- ‘right hand’ and išarwili(ya)- ‘of the right hand’ (s.vv., on the connection see CLL:94; HED K:164; EDHIL:471).
