wašumman-

‘wellness, pleasantness’

1.1.1Transmission

Attestations come from two NS ritual fragments, one of which may be a birth incantation (Starke 1990a:271).

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. wa-šu-um-ma-an KUB 35.97, 8’ (CTH 764, LNS)
  wa-šu-ma-˹an?˺ KBo 13.261, 7’ (CTH 770, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz. – Reading of final -˹an?˺ at KBo 13.261, 7’ (contra Starke 1985b:373), because the two lower tips of the broken horizontal wedge of AN seem to be recognizable in the scratched surface. – At KUB 35.97, 8’, Bossert 1954a:95 restores D]wa-šu-um-ma-an-ḫa.

1.1.4Meaning

The context is semantically inconclusive, but the etymological connection with wašu- ‘good, pleasant’ is probable (Starke 1990a:271, CLL:266). This suggests a meaning ‘wellness, pleasantness’ vel sim., but scholars prefer not to assign a meaning (Starke 1990a:271, CLL:266, Tischler 2008a:224, HEG W-Z:419f.).

1.1.5Stem

While it is very likely that wašumman- is in some way derived from wašu- ‘good, pleasant’, it is not clear whether wašumman- is based on wašu- itself or on an intermediate verb (thus Starke 1990a:271, followed in HEG W-Z:419).
