1.1.2Forms

abl./instr. wa-ša-ta-ti KUB 35.103 ii 7’ (CTH 766, MS)

KUB 35.133 iii 15’ features a form wa-x-ša-aš-ša, where x can either be read as -ša- or -ta-. The following sign is clearly -ša- in the handcopy, but much less clearly identifiable in the photograph. If it were to be read -ta-, at the result would be a form wa-˹ša?-ta?˺-aš-ša and as such belong to the present lemma. Since it is found in a list of words denoting blissful items, the meaning assumed here for wašat(i)- conforms to that semantic field; it is needless to say that this highly speculative.

1.1.4Meaning

No meaning is assigned in Otten 1953a:43, DLL:108, or CLL:263. Considering the fact that, in the following sentence, the mother cleanses the house with urin (abl./instr.), the abl./instr. form under discussion probably also denotes a cleansing substance or a generic noun that includes the following cleansing substances. The latter is to be slightly preferred, also taking into account the function of the suffix /-ad(i)-/, which frequently takes collective forms (see unter Stem). If correct, the word may, with due caution, be tentatively regarded as a derivative of the stem attested also in HLuw. wa-sà-ti ‘with goodness, favor, respect’. This leads to the semantic interpretation as ‘good substance (?)’ proposed here. Cf. also the occurrence ibid. ii 5’ of the adverb wašu ‘well’ from the same root.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

If the spelling wa-ša-t° of the single attestation is reliable, we are dealing with a stem in the suffix /-ad(i)-/, which is historically composed of two abstract suffixes *-eh2- and *-t- and seems to have the expected meaning within the semantic area of abstractness and collectivity, with cases of concretization.
