1.1.4Meaning
CLuw. waḫra- is commonly agreed to be a rhyme word of āḫra- ‘pain’, following the same pattern as Hitt. āi- wāi-. Therefore, like the form, the meaning of waḫra- is also derived from that of āḫra-, i.e. it is ‘pain’ or a near-synonym such as ‘woe’ (Meriggi 1957a:209, DLL:105, CLL:249, Hutter 2003a:262, HHw:s.v., HEG U-Z:201f.; differently Kammenhuber 1985a:78, Hutter 1988a:81 and Ünal 2007a:778: ‘disaster’).
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
Parallel to āḫra-, waḫra- is a common gender a-stem.

‘woe’1.2.1Transmission
In Hittite transmission, waḫra- is always found as the second member of the rhyming formula āḫra- waḫra-, which occurs in Luwian rituals of the Kuwattalla tradition and other ritual fragments of unknown attribution.

| stem form | waa-a-ar-ra(=) | KUB 35.164 iii 12’ | (CTH 752, OS or MS) |
The sequence kat in waa-a-ar-ra-kat is here taken as an enclitic demonstrative pronoun (following Melchert 1984b:28-30); see under Pal. ka-. For the diverging view that -k- in -kat represent a separate morpheme and -at the instrumental ending cf. Starke 1990a:71-74, 72 n. 165, Eichner 2010a:51-53.

1.3.4Meaning
The word wārra=kat is found in a ritualistic passage, in which it is extinguished. Thus, wārra- should represent something evil to be removed through a ritual. Carruba 1970a:51, 77 and likewise Melchert (CLL:4, Melchert 1994a:195, 219) suggest a connection with CLuw. waḫra- c. ‘pain, woe’ comparing also Pal. ārra- with CLuw. āḫra- c. Melchert (loc. cit.) also adduces Hittite āi- and wāi-. The semantics ‘pain, woe’ for Pal. wārra- are contextually adequate: waa-a-ar-ra=kat ki-iš-ta-a-a=m-mu ‘This woe is extinguished for me.’
[D.S.]
1.3.5Origin
A Hattic origin has been suggested on account of the sign <waa> (Kammenhuber 1959a:29), which is no longer considered a valid argument.
[D.S.]
2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘woe’
Equating Luwian waḫra- ‘woe’ and Pal. wārra- ‘id.’, we can reconstruct a Proto-Anatolian noun *u̯aH-reh2- c. ‘woe’, which builds a counterpart to PAnat. *aHreh2-; cf. Hitt. āi- wāi-! Tischler (HEG W-Z:202) posits an onomatopoetic origin.
