1.1.4Meaning

The noun mašḫarišša represents something positive that has to be given to the city-land of Ḫattuša by the gods. Whereas no semantics are given by Melchert (CLL:144, Melchert 2004d:472f.), Sasseville 2021a:498f. translates it with ‘growth’ in analogy to mašḫāḫi(t)-. However, the exact meaning of mašḫāḫi(t)- is not certain, which makes the semantics assigned here highly dubious.

1.1.5Stem

Within an analysis of Luwian nouns ending in -išša, Melchert 2004d:472f. explains that they originate in neuter stems in -iš-, but that a thematization may have taken place, i.e. /-is-a-/ n., especially in Iron Age Luwian (i.e. HLuw.). Therefore, we take the ending -išša here to belong to an actual neuter stem in -iš- (+ =ša). Assuming that the base *mašḫa- is the same as the one in mašḫāḫi(t)-, we posit a derivation in -r(i)- followed by the addition of a neuter s-stem, i.e. mašḫa-riš-; cf. HLuw. /tuwaris-/.
