1.1.4Meaning

The word ayatniyaš occurs in a list of cult implements and is modified by an-da ap-pa-an-da ‘fully equipped ayatniyaš’. The lacuna immediately before ayatniyaš renders any interpretation tentative. A formation related to Luw. āyattar/n- n. ‘act (?)’ was pointed out by DLL:24. Melchert (CLL:44) takes it as a relational adjective in -i(ya)-, i.e. ayatni(ya)- ‘of the act (?)’. Chrzanowska 2011b follows HHw:12 in taking it as a cult implement, which would indicate a substantivization of the relational adjective, i.e. some implement pertaining to an act (?).

1.1.5Stem

The type of substantivization, which is likely to have occurred, is unclear with respect to its gender and nominal stem class.

1.1.6Origin

The presence of the suffix -atn- (from -attar/n-) serves as strong evidence for a Luwian origin as well as its direct relationship to the Luwian abstract base āyattar/n- ‘act (?)’. The word was already considered Luwian by DLL:24 and followed by Melchert (CLL:44).

[D.S.]

For the derivational base, see CLuw. āyattar/n-.
