*iśto

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

Reconstructed from personal names attested in a Sidetic name list of unknown date (cf. Nollé 2001a:642–644, cf. Zinko 2016a) and in a graffito on a tomb stela from Lyrbe of unknown date (Zinko & Zinko 2016a:377f., Zinko & Zinko 2019a:427f.), although only a derivative might be attested in the latter inscription, see s.v. *iśtore.

1.1.2Forms

gen. sg. iśtoś S9, 2

The attestation follows Zinko 2016a:366 checked against the photographs in Zinko 2016a:360 Abb. 1. On i̤śtorẹmr of S11 that allegedly contains iśto, see s.v. *iśtore.

1.1.3Graphic Features

The precise reading of the letter N14 requires further research, for the time being the transcription ‹ś› of Pérez Orozco is used here, without any phonetic implication.

1.1.4Meaning ‘(unknown)’

Since the origin and the meaning of the personal name iśto is completely unknown, this case alone would not be enough reason for including this word in this dictionary. However, since it is also attested in the compound name iśtoremr (either as such or, more probably, via its derivative *iśtore, see s.v.), we may be dealing with a Sidetic word (and thus the proposed connection with only partly similar Greek onomastic material by Nollé 2001a:642, Pérez Orozco 2007a:129, and Zinko 2016a:366 can be excluded), even if its meaning remains unknown (the Anatolian preform *Istuwa- claimed by Pérez Orozco 2007a:129 and Zinko 2016a:371 remains speculative at our current knowledge of Sidetic historical phonology; Zinko’s proposal [Zinko 2016a:366] to connect it with the Pamphylian name ισϝαρδιας has obviously no basis).
