1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional, because it has not yet been connected to any cognates outside of HLuw., and the interpretation of its derivational base /irnila-/ is likewise uncertain, see the discussion there. Only the final suffix of the word, /-izza-/ is well-known from other words and its shape therefore certain.

1.1.4Meaning

The partly transparent morphology can be used to identify the word as an adjective of appurtenance in /-izza-/, formed from a noun that occurs in the very same text one clause earlier. ADIYAMAN 1, §§1-3 hence read: [… (DEUS)TONITR]US-[s]a [i+ra/i]-ní-la-a PRAE-i CRUS+RA/I a-wa/i za-na CAELUM-sa-si-na i+ra/i-ní-li-za-na [(DEUS)TONITRUS … ] za-pa-[wa/i] CAELUM i+ra/i-ní-li-za-na (DEUS)TONITRUS-na kwa/i-i-sa MALUS-la/i-ti ARHA+MALLEUS, approx. /… Tarhunzas irnila pari … a=wa zan tippasassin irnilizzan … zan=ba=… tippasassin irnilizzan Tarhunzan kwis attuwaladi ahha wallai/, translating as ‘(The Storm-god) Tarhunza stood before the irnila-. This celestial [Tarhunza] of irnila- … But (he) who smashes this celestial Tarhunza of irnila- with evil, …’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:345).

The suffix /-izza-/ frequently, but by no means exclusively, The strength of the connection between /-izza-/ and toponyms is overstated in Bauer 2014a:151-154. attaches to toponyms to form ethnic adjectives. It is therefore possible that /irnila-/ constitutes a toponym. However, the first preserved clause of the inscription appears to describe the Storm-god Tarhunza as standing in front of an /irnila-/, suggesting that it denotes something concrete instead of referring to a locale. The matter can only be elucidated with further evidence.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The adjective is derived with the suffix /-izza-/ from the noun /irnila-/ ‘(unknown)’, cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:197. As is obvious from the attestations, it does not undergo i-mutation.

[AH.B.]

For the derivational base, see HLuw. /irnila-/.
