1.1.3Meaning

The Luwian expression māyaššiš EME-iš was compared to Hittite pangawaš EME-aš ‘the tongue of the crowd’, which led to the approximate semantic assignment ‘of the crowd’ to māyašša/i- (Otten 1953a:38, Laroche 1959a:65, Starke 1990a:506, outdated Meriggi 1957b:66). Considering the Hittite word māya- ‘adult(hood)’ (as emphasized by Melchert (CLL:146)), the meaning ‘adulthood’ is more adequate for the Luwian base māya(/i)- and, therefore, māyaššiš EME-iš can be translated as ‘the tongue of adults/adulthood/adult crowd’. Considering that the “tongue” in this expression refers to something negative that has been uttered by people, Yakubovich 2010d:47 translates ‘the slander by the adults’ (likewise Sasseville 2020b:113 “calomnie”).

1.1.4Stem

Since the Luwian lexeme is only attested in the genitival adjective, nothing can be said about its nominal stem class.
