1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photograph in the Konkordanz. The attestation of ]mi-ia-u-wa-an-zi, tentatively attributed to the lexeme in question in HED M:173, rather belongs to memiyauwanzi, the infinitive of ‘to speak’ (see Starke 1985b:195).
[E.R.]
1.1.4Meaning
The lexeme is attested as part of a long list of nom. pl. c. forms badly understood, but probably describing or denoting the clients of the ritual. Accordingly, its meaning must have a positive connotation. Based on its phonological shape, Starke 1989a:666 interprets the word as an equivalent of Hitt. miyu-/-aw- ‘gentle, mild’ and assigns the same meaning (Starke 1990a:62). This is accepted in the handbooks (CLL:149, HED M:173, EDHIL:584).
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
Starke 1989a:446 rightly assumes that Luwian adjectives do no longer show ablaut in their i- and u-suffixes. As a consequence, he derives the nom. pl. c. mīyawinzi from a stem mīyawa/i-, i.e. from a thematized i-mutated stem that is based on the oblique stem miyaw-. As Melchert (CLL:149) correctly observes, the form taken by itself does not prove the a/i-inflection. However, it is the systematic argument that tips the scales towards the mutated stem.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘soft’
The comparison between Hitt. miyu-/-aw- ‘soft’, Luw. miyawa/i- and Lyd. miwa- n. ‘mild, (sbst.) ointment (?)’ allows for the reconstruction of a Proto-Anatolian adjectival u-stem, i.e. *mih1-Éu̯-/-u-´ ‘soft’; cf. HED M:170-173, HEG L-M:221-223, EDHIL:583f.
