1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found at least once in a ritual fragment mentioning gold and stones, and once in what appears to be a birth ritual.

1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. a-aš-š[u-]˹ú-iš KUB 35.108 + KUB 35.87, 22’/4’ (CTH 765, MS)
nom./acc. sg. n. or dat./loc. pl. a-aš-šu-ia-an-za KBo 39.179, 5’ (CTH 766, MS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The first attestation listed in the table has been recovered through an indirect join published in Rieken & Sasseville 2019a:525f. The distance between the two fragments is not absolutely assured, and thus one or two extra signs may possibly have to be restored in the lacuna. Moreover, the reading ˹ú for the broken sign is far from assured.

1.1.4Meaning

In the context, KUB 35.108+, the adjective modifies the river Mala, whereas in KBo 39.179 is occurs in a fragmentary context pertaining to gold and stones. Comparing it with the Luwian word NA4āššu- ‘stone (monument)’, it is tempting to recognize a derivative in -i(ya)-, which is already attested in HLuw. as SCALPRUM-na; see /assuwi(ya)-/. This would also be an adequate epithet for a river. Nevertheless, more evidence would be welcome.
