1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Four readings have been proposed: (1) Ú-UL ḫa-pa-an-zu-˹wa-ar˺ (Civil & Güterbock 1971a:133), which does not fit the traces; moreover, it is morphologically impossible, because the verbal noun of *ḫapanzuwā(i)- should have been *ḫapanzuwawar (with Melchert 1988a:236 n. 36, in spite of HED H:118 with haplology, and Scheucher 2012a:511f.). (2) Ú-UL ḫa-pa-an-zu-˹wa-aš˺ (thus listed in Hoffner 1967a:92), for which, if interpreted as the gen. sg. of **ḫapanzuwar, the same morphological problems apply. If, however, it is meant to be the nom. sg. of an adjective in -uwa-, no objections can be raised. (3) Ú-UL ḫa-pa-an-zu-w[a-a]n-za (see Melchert 1988a:236 n. 36), though impeccable from the point of view of morphology, is incompatible with the traces. What Melchert seems to identify as -za belongs to the first sign (gú) in the next column. (4) Goetze apud HW2 Ḫ:215 suggests Ú-UL ḫa-pa-an-zu-wa-la?-aš?, which is impossible because -la-aš requires more space than is available. A fifth possibility is ḫa-pa-an-zu-˹wa˺-za?˺, the -want- adjective with graphic omission of the nasal would be the only incident of this phenomenon in the text and hardly explicable by lack of space. As a final alternative, Ú-UL ḫa-pa-an-zu-˹wa-a-an?˺ may be reconciled with the traces. The use of a neuter form is also found ibid. ii 39’. Ünal 2007a:167 lists both ḫapanzuwar and ḫapanzuwant-.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning ‘loyal, trustworthy’ is based on the equation of its negated form with the negated Akk. adjective lā taklu ‘not trustworthy’ in the lexical list KBo 1.42; cf. CLL:54, and with slight modifications HED H:118f. (‘dependable’), Tischler 2008a:44 and Maier 2013a:206-208 (‘vertrauend, gehorsam’), Ünal 2007a:167 ‘dependable, obedient’, HW2 Ḫ:215 (s.v. ḫapanzuu̯ai- ‘zuverlässig, treu sein’).

1.1.5Stem
If the reading ḫa-pa-an-zu-˹wa-a-an?˺ is accepted, a stem ḫapanzuwant- can be posed, which can be analyzed as either an -ant- adjective derived from *ḫapanzu- or *ḫapanzuwa-, or as a participle of a denominative verb *ḫapanzuwā(i)- built from the same base. Weitenberg 1984a:185f. considers further the possibility that *ḫapanzu- is a deverbative formation, either substantive or adjective (differently, but phonologically impossible HED H:118f.).

1.1.6Origin
The assumption of a Luwian origin is based solely on the obvious connection with the gloss wedge word
ḫapanzuwalatar and HLuw. /*hapanzu-/; cf. DLL:41, HEG A-K:161, Weitenberg 1984a:186, Melchert 1988a:236-238, CLL:54.
