‘the liver procedure’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is mainly found in the Great Ritual of Kuwattalla and Šilalluḫi as well as in the related dupaduparša-ritual.

1.1.2Forms

Hitt. gen. sg. ˹i˺-ik-ku-na-at-ta-aš KUB 35.18 i 10 (CTH 761, MS)
  ik-ku-na-at-ta-aš Bo 4388, 4’ (CTH 470, NS)
  [i-ik-ku-n]a-at-ta-aš KUB 35.78 i? 8’ (CTH 759, NS)
  [i-ik-ku-n]a-˹at-ta-aš˺ KUB 35.15 iii 14 (CTH 762, MS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). The restoration suggested by Melchert (CLL:86), i.e. gen. adj. acc. sg. c. [ik-ku-u]n-na-at-ta-aš-ši-in (KUB 35.16 i 14’), is untenable. Also untenable is the restoration by Hutter 2019a:339 n. 18 as [i-ik-k]u-na-at-ta-aš-ši-in. The broken off sign in ]x-˹na-at-ta˺-aš-ši-in looks rather like 〈u〉, i.e. perhaps [ik-ku]˹-u?-na-at-ta˺-aš-ši-in. However, until a duplicate of the passage is found, any restoration must be considered highly tentative.

1.1.4Meaning

The word īkkunatta- is used as an epithet for sheep in the context of the Great Ritual performed by Kuwattalla and Šilalluḫi. Its semantics depend on that assigned to the derivational base ikkuwar/n-, translated here as ‘liver’. Therefore, it would refer to the ritual procedure involving the liver of the sheep (pace CLL:86, Hutter 2019a:340).

[D.S.]

1.1.5Stem

The word is clearly a noun in -atta- most likely derived directly from the oblique stem of the noun ikkuwar/n- ‘liver’ or from a denominative verb *ikkuna(i)-(di) (cf. under īkkunāwunta). Since it is only attested as a Hittite genitive singular, nothing can be said about its gender or its mutated vs. non-mutated status. Starke 1990a:537 suggests a deverbal derivation from a non-attested denominative verb.

[D.S.]

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin of īkkunatta- is made clear by its derivational base as well as by its occurrence exclusive to the rituals of the Luwian hierodule Kuwattalla (Starke 1990a:537, Melchert (CLL:86)).

[D.S.]

For the derivational base, see CLuw. ikkuwar/n-.
