1.1.1Transmission

Although frequently attested in Luwian rituals and in Luwian spells in NS and perhaps in MS, it appears always in the same phrase.

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. c. ma-aš-ša-na-al-li-in KUB 35.45 ii 24 (CTH 760, NS)
  ˹ma˺-aš-˹ša˺-[na-al-li-in] KBo 29.37, 7 (CTH 763, NS)
  [ma-aš]-˹ša˺-na-al-li-in KUB 35.43 iii 4’ (CTH 761, NS)
  [ma-aš-ša]-na-al-li-in KUB 35.48 ii 18’ (CTH 760, NS)
  [ma-aš-ša-na-al-li]-˹in˺ KUB 35.73, 12’ (CTH 763, NS)
  [ma-aš-ša-na-al-li]-i-in KBo 29.10 ii 7’ (CTH 760, MS?)
  ma-aš-ša-na-a-al-˹li˺-[in] KUB 35.12 iii 4 (CTH 762, NS)

Sumerographically:

acc. sg. c. DINGIR{MEŠ}-li-in KUB 35.11 ii 11’ (CTH 760, NS)

The attestations follow CLL:143 and Starke 1990a:606 (cf. also Laroche 1959a:70) slightly corrected and checked against the photographs of the Konkordanz. The plural marker MEŠ in DINGIRMEŠ-li-in must be a scribal error, since it qualifies the acc. sg. c. KASKAL-an and appears as acc. sg. c. maššanā̆llī̆n in the parallel texts.

1.1.3Meaning ‘divine’

Due to the Sumerographic spelling, the clear meaning of the stem and the transparent suffixation the meaning is beyond doubt and accordingly generally accepted (Laroche 1959a:70; Carruba 1982b:2, Carruba 1990a:250; CLL:143, Melchert 2003f:287; Tischler 2008a:114, Tischler 2016a:216; Yakubovich 2012a:332f.; Sideltsev 2014a:859; not included in Ünal 2016a).
