While Laroche (DLL:113) lists the form in a separate lemma, Melchert (CLL:278) tentatively assigns zappunta under zappa-(ti), followed in HEG W-Z:667 and Sasseville 2021a:34-36. The first option is preferred here for the reasons cited under Meaning.

1.1.4Meaning
Since Poetto 2010c it has been accepted that zappa-(ti) means ‘to offer in sacrifice, slaughter’. The semantics are specified here and the claim is put forward that the verb at least started out from ‘to make a flow (of liquid); to drain, let flow; to let bleed (?)’ (see under Lemma). In any case, none of the proposals are compatible with the context of zappunta, where pieces of furniture are objects of the verb, e.g. wa-aš-ša-an-za wa-aš-ša-ti za-ap-pu-u[n-ta] “they z.-ed a table from/with a table.” While Tischler (HEG W-Z:667) thinks that the passage deals with ‘stacking’ (with instrumental interpretation of the -ati form) or ‘taking away’ (with ablatival interpretation) the relevant items, Yakubovich (pers. comm.) suggests a more abstract translation, i.e. ‘to count, match’. Obviously, etymological considerations centering on Hitt. kappue-(mi) ‘to count’ play a role here. This is attractive and awaits further contextual support.

1.1.5Stem
The stem posited depends on the lexical assignment. Here, a separate stem zappu- ending in a vowel is accepted, which may or may not be a compounded root verb (see under Meaning).
