1. Individual Anatolian Languages
1.1 Luwian (Glossenkeilwörter)
ḫandaš
1.1.1Transmission
The word is attested frequently in the Hittite corpus, but only once is it marked with a gloss wedge (in a NH text composed under Ḫattušili III).
[E.R.]
1.1.2Graphic Features
Compared with other single wedges in the text, the wedge before ḫandaš consists of a rather small and feeble imprint that gives the impression of having been produced unintentionally and has to be regarded as a mistake. This seems to be the commonly held view, cf. Melchert 2005a and van den Hout 2006a (neither one mentioning
ḫandaš in their lists of Luwian lexemes), and Tischler 2008a:43, who explicitly states that the lexeme is Hittite.
[E.R.]
1.1.3Meaning
For the meaning of ḫandaš, see HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:162, HED Ḫ:95, HEG A-K:152, Tischler 2008a:43, Ünal 2007a:160.
[E.R.]
1.1.4Origin
See above under Graphic Features. Moreover, the form ḫandaš, probably a dat./loc. pl. of ḫant- ‘face’ with the Hittite ending -aš, precludes a Luwian origin.
[E.R.]
For the lemma head see *ḫant-.
