1.1.3Meaning
The semantic interpretation of ḫantalliyā(i)-(mi) ‘to dare’ goes back to Götze 1933a:249 and is widely accepted (see HW:53, 350, Kronasser 1966a:497, HEG A-K:154f., HED Ḫ:108, HW 2nd ed. H:168, Starke 1990a:130, CLL:52, Tischler 2008a:53). It is based on the contexts in Annals of Muršili, e.g. KBo 4.4 iii 62’f.: (62’)nu-mu-za nam-ma UDKAM.ḪI.A za-aḫ-ḫi-a-u-wa-an-zi Ú-UL [ ] (63’)ḫa-an-da-al-li-˹i˺-e-er ‘They no longer dared to wage battle against me in daytime.’ The construction with infinitive also attested in KBo 16.8 ii 24’ adds further support on the syntactic side.

1.1.4Stem
It is common sense that the verb is denominative and derived from an adjective *ḫandalla-, *ḫantali- or *ḫantalli-, which is nowadays classified as a stem in -alla/i- (van Brock 1962a:129, Kronasser 1966a:497, Oettinger 1979a:354 n. 201, HEG A-K:154f., implicitly HED Ḫ:108, Starke 1990a:130, CLL:52). Hitt. ḫantalliyā(i)-(mi) belongs to those verbs whose suffixes are transferred from Luw. -i(ya)- into Hitt. -iyā(i)- stems, in the course of the borrowing process (cf. Oettinger 1979a:382-385).
[E.R.]
1.1.5Origin
Luwian origin was already assumed in CLL:52 and Melchert 2005a:450. It is not absolutely assured, but highly probable. Evidence for this assumption comes from use of the suffix -alla/i- and the verbal stem in -iyā(i)-(mi) (see under Stem).
