1.1.4Meaning ‘care, fixing, arrangement’

The word occurs in a long list of Tutelary Deities of the Labarna, the Hittite king, that receive sacrifice: ŠA l[a-ba-a]r-na ˹ḫa˺-an-da-˹at-ta˺- DLAMMA-i ‘to the Tutelary Deity of the ḫ. of Labarna.’ Contra HW 2nd ed.:173, it is obvious that the abstract noun is derived from a verbal base equivalent to Hittite ḫandā(i)-(mi) ‘to entrust; to match, fix, fit, arrange; to determine’. Due to its wide range of meanings, the interpretations suggested for the derived noun also vary: Götze 1928a:79: ‘Treue’, Archi 1975b:96: ‘della decisione’, Starke 1990a:130: ‘Festsetzung’, HED Ḫ:106: ‘trust, determination(?)’, McMahon 1991a:105: ‘decision’, CLL:52: ‘care, provision’, HW 2nd ed.:173: ‘Entscheidung(?)’. The decision taken here for ‘care, fixing, arrangement’ should be regarded as the attempt at finding a basic meaning that may have served as the starting point for the more specified semantic developments. Its probability is further enhanced by the fact that the syntagma is followed by ‘the Tutelary Deity of the Lordliness of the Labarna’, which also refers to the king’s power.

1.1.5Stem

Unfortunately, the noun is attested only in the genitive or genitival derivatives. As a consequence, it is not possible to determine whether or not the word featured i-mutation, and both the common gender stem ḫandatta(/i)- and neuter ḫandatt(a)- remain as alternatives to be considered.

  1. lamarḫandatta(/i)-

1.1.7Origin

The Luwian form of the genitival adjective and the gloss wedges are proof of the Luwian origin of the word (cf. DLL:40, CLL:52, van den Hout 2006a:246).
