kirunumeze-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This reading of this hapax is not assured. It is found in a grave inscription from Limyra. For a new edition of this inscription, see Neumann 2012a:406.

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. ki[r]unumezẽ TL 107.3 (Limyra)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The word is generally glossed as ki[.]unumeze- without any secure restoration. Melchert (DLL:32) reads ki[ri]numezẽ with Arkwright but does not present any arguments for his decision. Neumann 2007a:168 provides ki[r]unumezẽ as a further possibility. Pending a new collation of the inscription, combinatorial evidence will be used in an attempt to decide between the two proposals: adducing the personal name kiru- (TL 132.1), one can endorse the existence of the sequence kiru- in the Lycian language, which makes Neumann’s restoration more convincing than the one found in Melchert’s lexicon.

1.1.4Meaning

The noun kirunumeze- is found in the sanction formula of a grave inscription, in which it is coordinated with munikleime- (a sort of payment): ebei=(i)je : lawitẽnu : munikleimẽ : se ki[r]unumezẽ (TL 107.2-3) ‘Here, he must honor the munikleime-payment and the kirunumezẽ.’ Unfortunately, without an etymological approach, no convincing meaning can be suggested.

1.1.5Stem

The substantive kirunumeze- can be best interpreted as a stem in -eze- c., i.e. a derivative in -e- from a base in -a-, i.e. -aza- → -az-e- → -eze- (+ vowel harmony). For this derivational chain, see Sasseville 2021a:205-208. Differently, Melchert (DLL:32) suggests a genitival plural of an ethnicon in -eze/i-, which is not supported by the syntax of the passage.
