1. Individual Anatolian Languages

1.1 Cuneiform Luwian

šuwāru-

‘heavy or full (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

The verb is found in a MS copy of an OH festival with Luwian and Palaic passages.

[E.R.]

1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. šu-wa-ru-u[š] KBo 19.155, 5’ (CTH 751, MS)
nom./acc. sg. n. šu-wa-a-ru KBo 27.77 ii 3’ (CTH 751, MS)

Pace Carruba 1970a:71, the passages of the above attestations are probably Luwian (cf. the adjective ending in -attantiš, probably with i-mutation, in KBo 19.155, 3’, and 4’ resp., as well as ḫamšukkalāti in KBo 27.77 ii 5’).

[E.R.]

1.1.3Graphic Features

Reading šu-wa-ru-u[š preferred, following CLL:198 contra Starke 1985b:42 (who assumes šu-wa-ru-i[š), because i-mutation is not expected in nom. sg. forms of u-stems. – Attestation in KBo 27.77 ii 3’ checked against the handcopy.

[E.R.]

1.1.4Meaning

The context of the lexeme is not informative. However, the collocation with CLuw. āru- ‘high’ in KBo 19.155, 5’ and possibly in KBo 27.77 ii 3’ leaves no doubt about the lexical identification of CLuw. šuwāru- with Hitt. šuwāru ‘fully, completely, heavily’ (petrified in adverbial use), which features the same collocation in aru=šuwāru=pat ‘highly (and) fully/heavily’ vel sim. in KUB 33.106 iii 33 (see Carruba 1966a:14). Since the meaning of CLuw. āru- ‘high’ is generally accepted, a similar meaning that could have undergone bleaching and subsequently denote a high degree of intensity or completion, such as ‘fully’ or ‘heavily’ (parallel to ‘highly’), is very likely. The latter is preferred here (thus also CLL:198) for etymological and graphic considerations (see under Reconstruction).

1.2 Luwian (Glossenkeilwörter)

()Glossenkeilšūwaru

‘(ghost word)(?)’

1.2.1Transmission

While the adverb šuwāru is widely attested in Hittite texts, the form with the putative gloss wedge occurs only once in the Kumarbi Cycle.

 [E.R.]

1.2.2Forms

indecl. Glossenkeilšu-u-wa-ru(=) KUB 36.2b ii 22’ (CTH 343, NS)

doppelter Glossenkeilšu-u-wa-ru-it in KUB 44.50 i 10 does not belong here, but is rather a form of a concrete noun, as maintained in Soysal 2002a (with discussion of the previous literature) and HEG Š:1234-1236.

[E.R.]

1.2.3Graphic Features

The reading of the gloss wedge is not certain, since there seems to be an erasure covering the winkelhaken and a following vertical wedge. While it is clear that the vertical is under the erasure, the winkelhaken may be written either under or over the erasure. The present uncertain instance is the only case of the gloss wedge before šuwāru ‘heavily’ and is, therefore, disregarded here (differently e.g. Weitenberg 1984a:193, HEG Š:1233, Rieken et al. 2009a).

[E.R.]

1.2.4Meaning

For references regarding Hitt. šuwāru, see under Hittite.

[E.R.]

1.2.5Origin

The occurrence of the gloss wedge with šuwāru is highly uncertain. Thus, there is no hint for a Luwian origin of the word, and it is therefore classified as Hittite.

1.3 Palaic

šuwāru-

‘heavy, complete (vel sim.)’

1.3.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the mythical passage of a ritual preserved on Old and Middle Hittite tablets.

[D.S.]

1.3.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. n. šu-wa-a-ru KUB 32.18 i 5’ (CTH 752, MS)

The passages, in which šu-wa-a-ru (KBo 27.77 in ii 3’) and šu-wa-ru-uš (KBo 19.155, 5’) are attested, could be Luwian instead of Palaic.

1.3.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photograph in the Konkordanz. For the proper segmentation of the words šu-wa-a-ru and ša-a-úi˺[-ti-ra-an], see Carruba 1966a:13 n. 10, Carruba 1970a:8, 71, contra Kammenhuber 1959a:46.

[D.S.]

1.3.4Meaning

Carruba 1966a:13-15 (and Carruba 1970a:71) equates Pal. šuwāru- to Hitt. šuwāru- ‘heavy, complete(ly)’ and assumes that the Palaic word has the same semantics. Unfortunately, the sentence in which Pal. šuwāru is attested is not completely preserved. Although we cannot verify the semantics contextually, the etymological comparison as well as the semantic assignment of Carruba are surely correct.

1.4 Hittite

šuwāru

‘fully, heavily’

1.4.1Literature / Comments

For Hitt. šuwāru, see HEG Š:1232-1234, HW 2nd ed.:201, 407, 456, Carruba 1966a:13-16, Puhvel 1981a:213f., Weitenberg 1984a:191-194, Tischler 2008a:157, EDHIL:796 (still not differentiating the lexeme from noun šuwaru-, which seems to designate a plant), Ünal 2007a:660. The alleged attestation of an adjective šuwaruš in šu-wa-ru-uš (Bo 2896 ii 3) is instead to be analysed as a sentence initial particle chain: šu=war=uš (contra Rieken et al. 2009a).

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘(unknown)’

The equation of CLuw, šuwāru-, Pal. šuwāru-, Lyd. sfarw-a- and Lyc. hberu-se speaks for the reconstruction of a Proto-Anatolian adjectival u-stem, *su̯ór-u-. The plene spelling of the root vowel -ā- in the Luwian and Palaic cognates speak for the reconstruction of an accented o-grade. For the identification of the root, see under PAnat. su̯er-.
