Ancient Egyptian w3-š3
‘to push, press, hit’1.1.1Origin
Schneider 2004a:22, Schneider 2008a:186, 196 proposed that Egyptian w3-š3 ‘to push, press, hit’ is a borrowing from Luwian wiši-/wišai- ‘to press’ (followed by Breyer 2004a:267, Breyer 2010b:356). Simon 2010a:86 has, however, demonstrated that this is phonologically not possible. Moreover, the meaning of the Cuneiform Luwian verb is now assumed to be ‘to emerge, to appear vel sim.’ (see s.v.), thus also the semantics exclude this proposal.
