wišuriye/a-zi
‘to press (together)’1.1.1Origin
Starke 1990a:549 claims that Hittite wišuriye/a- ‘to press (together)’ (for the vocalism of the stem see EDHIL:1013) is attested “sowohl als -i̯e- wie als -ii̯ae-Stamm”, which would suggest a loanword from Cuneiform Luwian and connect it with Cuneiform Luwian wiši- / wišaī- ‘to press’. However, Starke’s claim is neither descriptively correct (cf. EDHIL:1013) nor a decisive argument and thus there is no reason to assume a Luwian origin (note also that the meaning of wiši- / wišaī- is now assumed to be ‘to emerge, to appear’ vel sim., see s.v.). CLL:270 leaves the question open, but neither his list of Luwianisms (Melchert 2005a) nor that of van den Hout 2007a includes it. For further etymological proposals, see EDHIL:1014 and HEG U-Z:530.
